Lesson 4.6 — Industry Days & Early Supplier Engagement in BSOs
This closing lesson introduces Industry Days as a structured early supplier engagement tool used across Big Science Organisations, drawing on the experience of BigScience.dk and the ENRIITC project. Delivered by Nikolaj Zangenberg, Director of the Big Science Center at the Danish Technological Institute (DTI) and ILO for CERN, ESRF, and European-XFEL.
What you will learn:
— What BigScience.dk is: a network linking Danish suppliers to international Big Science facilities — 400 companies (~80% SME), operated by DTI with DTU as partner, established 2010, supported by the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science
— How ILOs operate: employed at governmental agencies (38%), public research organisations (38%), research infrastructures (6%), private commercial institutions (4%), private not-for-profit associations (19%); 50% of ILOs engage with 100–1,000 companies; raising national georeturn is by far the primary performance KPI; tools used: events for industry (98%), database of companies (96%), newsletters (70%)
— The supplier ecosystem: ILOs primarily engage companies in electrical & electronic engineering (74%), mechanical engineering (74%), energy (55%), ICT/data (53%), space (45%); 42.5% of engagements are for customised products; most common channels: ILO networks (87%), industrial associations (85%), national agencies (83%)
— Designing a good Industry Day: gauge interest from both sides (buyers/BSOs and suppliers/companies); be in good time; give opportunity for both buyers to present needs and suppliers to present capabilities. When innovation is involved: communicate potential gains clearly; spot the technology and competence match; be transparent about risk; help develop the win-win scenario
— The ENRIITC 9-step playbook for organising brokerage events (D3.4): (1) Set objectives and define strategy; (2) Plan the date and venue; (3) Secure speakers; (4) Plan the sessions; (5) Use engagement tools; (6) Announce and promote; (7) Consider the budget; (8) Set up GDPR-compliant registration; (9) Provide guidelines and background to speakers
— Key difference from OMC: Industry Days are primarily a supplier engagement and matchmaking format; OMC is a legally structured pre-procurement consultation that directly feeds into procurement strategy and specifications
